Job Tip #4 | Eight Reasons Why Good Is Never Good Enough and Why You Must Always Do Better

10 Jun

Recently, Tim Tymchyshyn, asked the following question on LinkedIn Answers:  “Why is it never good enough, even when you can’t do better?”

I received Best Answer for this question and thought I might share it with you.

At first glance this question seems easy to answer. But after considering the question I realize the difficulty of answering it.  But it’s a great question and in the end, I believe answering it will help make you and me a greater success.

In this case I’m assuming the word “it” refers to the word “good.” In other words, the question could have be phrased, “Why is good never good enough, even when you can’t do better?”

Here are my eight reasons why doing good is never enough:

  1. It is never good enough because when it becomes good enough you start doing mediocre work.
  2. It is never good enough because it REALLY can be improved upon. If not by you then by someone else.
  3. It is never good enough because you are only as good as your last project.
  4. It is never good enough because someone (your competitor) is always on the sideline waiting for you to give up or not perform at your best.
  5. It is never good enough because someone’s life or livelihood might depend on it.
  6. It is never good enough because when you concede that it is good, then your mind stops searching for ways to make it better.
  7. It is never good enough because you might be limited by the tools used to complete the project or job.
  8. It is never good enough because your subordinates might not be good enough and that limits you and/or your department.

That being said, do the best you can with the tools and staff you have. If you need help, then ask. But be certain you have indeed done the best you can because so much depends on it and so many are depending on you!

And when you are all finished and have done well (good), ask yourself the following question:

“What is the ONE thing I can do to make this the best work I can?”
